Luperon – A Brief History
Luperón is located in the Puerto Plata province of the Dominican Republic. It lies in the north of the country and is a small tourist center for sailors and cruiser.The town was formerly known as Blanco (White) or Pueblo Blanco (White Town), possibly after the many Spaniards who came to trade timber. Due to its shape and location, Luperon bay is ideal for sheltering from hurricanes, and many boats anchor there during the hurricane season.
Although there is no record of early inhabitants, it is said that Christopher Columbus had to enter the bay to protect his ships from a storm. Columbus named it “Bahia de Gracias” (Thanksgiving Bay), the current official name.
Luperón’s beaches have made it well known as a prime vacation location. The bay contains extensive mangroves, unique to Hispaniola, and is an ecological habitat for many species.Cruisers Net: Wednesday and Sunday. Channel 72 at 8:00 am.
Luperon is a small SUPER FRIENDLY town. It’s easy to get around and if you can overcome the language barrier, many locals will help you find your way around
Boat Parts: Repuestos Freddy – 829.912.6275 – located in Luperon is a local marine store that sells new and used boat parts. You can find a lot there. There is a marine boat parts store in Puerto Plata and another in Boca Chica.
Phone Service: There are two main companies that provide prepaid cellular and internet service in Luperon. Claro and Altice. They both have store fronts located in town. You will need your passport and if you have an UNBLOCKED phone a sim card will cost you around 100 pesos ($2 US)
On-anchor Services: Handy Andy 829.820.7461 or Domingo 809.849.7701 or Papo can be hailed on VHF 68 (water, fuel, propane, moorings etc.)
Provisions: There are several Supermarkets located in town with a nice selection of foods and other needs. There are also larger Walmart type stores located in Puerto Plata and Santiago, which are larger cities located nearby.
Money Exchange and ATM’s are located in Luperon .
Vegetable Market: Tuesdays near the park. Good prices and quality. 7:00am.
Guns: Have to be handed in to the Commandancia on arrival. They are boxed and handed back on departure.
